UNFINISHED STORY OF THE ESTONIA FERRY DISASTER
(LÕPUTA LUGU ESTONIAST)
Ancient Estonians believed that Man was created from the waters and had to disappeare in the waters too.
When the ESTONIA, one of the most beautiful passenger ferries of the Baltic Sea sank during a stormy night in September 1994, 852 men, women and children passed away. According to an ancient belief, many Estonians still hope that one nice day their relatives will return from the sunken boat. The belief is caused by history: thousands of Estonians disappeared during World War II as well as later under reprsessions of the Soviet regime but fortunately some decades later many of the losts were found.
The documentary tells several stories linked with the ferry disaster. Piia Orb lost her father when she was only 3 weeks old. Her father's cargo boat was torpedoed by the Nazis on the Atlantic Ocean during the first year of the war. And now, more then 50 years later that old man in Belfast decided to send a letter home. The reason was simple: he saw the Estonia ferry disaster on TV and it awoke his own story... Sirje Piht, spouse of captain Avo Piht doesn't want to be named a widow. She still waits her missing husband back from the Estonia ferry boat. The same feelings overhelm the whole family of Veides who lost twin-sisters onboard of the ESTONIA.
