The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the transition to a capitalist economy has torn a gaping hole in the fabric of basic social services in the Ukraine. It has left many of Ukraine's most vulnerable citizens unprotected. The breakdown of the family and of civil society has left tens of thousands of children homeless. The Way Home offers a Dickensian document and heartbreaking portrait of the street children of Odessa.
