ANIMAL CITY, 58 min. 2000 SWITZERLAND (filmed in India)

Written and directed by Frederic Gonseth and Catherine Azad, Photographed by Frederic Gonseth, Sound by Catherine Azad, Edited, produced and distributed by Frederic Gonseth Productions, Charles-Monnard 6, 1003 Lausanne, Switzerland, Tel. +41 21 3510511, Fax +41 21 3510513, frederic.gonseth@span.ch

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, northwest India. Frederic Gonseth and Catherine Azad have decided to let us discover the astonishing vibrancy of a contemporary Indian city from the viewpoint of the animals. And, first of all, the inextricable ties that link men and animals in that country. Donkeys, elephants, cobras, oxen, cows, dromedaries, goats and monkeys form an integral part of the urban landscape and, through religious rites, are the permanent partners of the inhabitants of Jaipur, the animal city. So the camera follows a particular goat or cow and goes back to its owner, who explains such and such a spiritual tradition or economic need for which this impulsive or impassive companion can be used. Because these beasts that Indian civilization is so pleased to integrate give the filmmakers an opportunity to rediscover in a particularly original way religions, castes and crafts which, here and there, are clashing head on with modern life. So even if the cows are sacred, if the monkeys are thieves, if the dromedaries are exhausted and the goats are light-fingered, they give Jaipur its unique flavor and, who knows, provided we follow the filmmakers in their strange adventure, also a surprising lesson in wisdom and tolerance. And perhaps at the end of the day this Brahman is right: "Without animals, there¹s no paradise."

LOOMADE LINN, Frederic Gonseth, Catherine Azad

Inimesed elavad ja surevad Jaipuris loomadega läbisegi. Loomaliikide rohkus on siin silmipimestav elevandid, lehmad, sead, ahvid, kaamelid, maod ja kõikvõimalikud linnud. Eriti keeruline on Jaipuris autot või trolli juhtida, sest kõik " tegelased" hulguvad mööda tänavaid. Loode-Indias on teisigi selliseid linnu, kuid mitmemiljonilise elanikkonnaga Jaipur rabab eurooplasi kõige enam.

THE BABAR WHO GIVES BACK CHANGE, 9 min. 2000 MACEDONIA

Written and directed by Vladimir Bocev, Photographed by Vladimir Bocev, Edited by Atanas Georgiev, Produced and distributed by Museum of Macedonia, Curciska bb, 1000 Skopje, Macedonia, Tel. +389 2 116044, Fax +389 2 116439, musmk@mt.net.mk

Changes that occurred in traditional culture, particularly in the second half of the 20th century, have contributed in turning part of it into its own replica. This phenomenon poses the issue of the attitude of different generations to the current state of traditional culture and, above all, to the issue of continuity. The film attempts to address some of these issues.

The Banished is a colorful documentary about the struggle for survival of neighborhood youth in Helsinki over a period of one year. In an attempt to keep the youngsters in Vesala off the streets, Timi, a 30 year-old gypsy, has founded a multicultural indoor bandy team. The main characters of the film, Krisse and Ville, both play in the team. Krisse's and Ville's families are joined together by friendship and a common lifestyle. Continuous clashes with the police, alienation from society and despair lock them into a path that is sure to lead nowhere. The future seems to hold no promise for Krisse and Ville.

The wolf is considered by many peoples and ethnic groups to be a symbol of evil. Hold a bridal ceremony for a killed wolf and make a turn of the village while carrying its body - this is to ask pity from the dead wolf. But at the end of film, when we leave the beliefs, the habits, the folkloric dances, and return from illusion to reality, the story of evil will not be sealed...

THE CLEANERS AND I, 82. min. 2000 FRANCE

Directed, photographed, edited and produced by Agncs Varda, Photographed by Stéphanie Krausz, Didier Rouget, Didier Doussin, Pascal Sautelet, Sound by Emmanuel Soland, Nathalie Vidal, Edited by Laurent Pineau, Produced and distributed by Cine Tamaris, rue Daguerre 88, 75014 Paris, France, Tel. +33 1 43226600, Fax +33 1 43217500

Searching for cleaners who live on discarded or stray food, Agncs Varda comes upon the most remarkable people. A bartender used to gather the grain that was left after the harvest, as nothing should be wasted. After the picking, winegrowers are also visited by people that want to take home the scraps that were not gathered. Agncs Varda records them jocularly and affectionately, and does not shrink from following sidetracks when she encounters something interesting. Like the small clock without hands that is perfect in her eyes, because it does not indicate the time. Sometimes, she suddenly dwells in her advanced age with self-mockery or she films her one hand with the other, turning the film into a disguised self-portrait. Filming is cleaning, too.

On the eve of April 25, 1999, took place at Commerce Square, in Lisbon, a performance of "Madrugada", a creation of the Theatre O Bando, commissioned by the Lisbon city council to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the April Revolution. Commerce Square was a huge stage: 40 vehicles at the square, with people living in them; 48 agitation groups transmitted the inquietude of "clandestine operations" during military dictatorship years. On the front walls of buildings, macro-images were projected, telling the story of the 48 years that preceded the April Revolution. At midnight, the April dawn breaks. A color explosion inundates the square. People crying freedom wave thousands of flags. The windows are opened. The music earns a big dimension of the festival. The people go out. The April conquests are lived and celebrated.

The night between January 13 and 14 is the time when the New Year is celebrated in Macedonia according to the Julian Calendar. On that night, rituals with masks are performed in many places. At some 100 km to the south of Skopje, in the village of Begnishte, the ritual with masks called Djolomars is performed on that occasion. Members of the village community believe that Djolomars can purge the world and provide new energy for its further existence by performing a whole range of cult and magic activities. According to beliefs, not performing this ritual would impose great danger for survival of the community.

Just like the dogs he now devotes his life to, Vladimir Vukovic roamed about despondently after the Bosnian war. His fiancée had left him for someone with better financial prospects. Most of his friends also left in search of money. And to avoid being drafted by the army, the pacifist Vukovic had worked for the Red Cross as an orderly collecting dead bodies in the streets of Sarajevo. Disillusioned, he found his true friends in the stray dogs in and around the city. Vukovic gives love and his animals return it; that is all he asks of life. He avoids contacts with people and prefers to forget what has happened. He carries his grief deep inside of him, but is happy when he sits on the grass in the sun with many of his dogs.

Dongba is the name of the religious cult of the Naxi, an ethnic minority group in southwest China. Their claim to cultural uniqueness is the last hieroglyphic script left in the world that can still be written and read. Unknown to the West, the Naxi Dongba cult was discovered in the 1920's by the Austrian explorer Joseph Rock, who wrote the first scientific studies on a culture that later during the Cultural Revolution would almost be extinguished. The film is based around a special ritual to appease the Demons of Suicide and presents a world on the brink of extinction.

A portrait of a woman who has spent every day for nearly 20 years doing the same, monotonous, repetitive work, but who is, nonetheless, quite happy with her life and at peace with herself. She has reconciled her dreams with reality. The main character, Aina - the Egg Lady of the title - breaks up to 40 000 eggs by hand daily for a Latvian bakery company. Although the company has been privatized and many of its production processes modernized and automated in the last few years, almost nothing has changed in the Egg Lady's job. She says that spending all day breaking eggs "allows me to think a great deal about life."

FOR EVER LITTLE, 62 min. 1999 NETHERLANDS

Directed by Barbara den Uyl, Photographed by Peter Brugman, Sound by Jae Vleeshouwer, Edited by Barbara Hin, Produced by Leen van den Berg

Persons of an unusually small size have always been fascinating, either as fictional characters in fairytales and sagas, or in the flesh, shown off in fairs or circuses as curiosities, since people were ready to pay a lot to see them. These days many little people rebel against this special status. They try to make their lives as normal as possible. The film follows a small opera singer and some of her friends at their work, at home and on a journey to a beautiful small island, where they have a great dinner followed by a swinging party. Gradually, each character reveals his or her personality. They talk about their problems, love affairs, and difficulties in finding work and whether or not to risk having children, knowing that they could be little like themselves. The film does not try to trace the history of their lives. It aims to confront the viewer with the meaning of "being small" and uses music, humor and beauty to make people look at "imperfection" with a different eye. Among many little women and men the film presents famous opera singer Marianne Blok.

HOLY MOUNTAIN, 28 min. 2001 Mari El

At the end of the 10th century, the Mari people founded the fortress of Kukarka on the river Vyatka in the land of their ancient forefathers. It was from this stronghold that the chieftain Tshumbylat reigned: a figure much loved and respected by the people. After his death he was buried at the foot of the mountain and declared to be a god. Still today people come to pray so that the mountain god might protect them from their bloodthirsty enemies and so that he would bring peace and blessings to the people. It is said that this 'Holy Mountain', which reaches into the very heavens, is the dwelling place of the king of the gods: Kugo Jumo. We call our nature religion Tshimari, which means 'people of the sun'. Every four years we gather at the foot of the mountain of Tshumbylat, by the Vyatka River,. This is a wonderful event that unites the people and regions of Mari-El. Our holy rites are performed only on three particular days of the week. These are Monday, Friday and Sunday. Yet one may also worship at the time of a New Moon or Full Moon. We have nine important gods altogether and each of them has an attendant. A complicated hierarchical system grants each of them different specific sacrificial animals or birds. The introductory part of the ritual is carried out by only a dedicated few (a large crowd no longer gathers). For this, three fire-offerings are lit for the gods: the Earth-god, Universe-god and the Tribal Mother goddess. Still remaining is the animal sanctifying ritual. For this, spring water is poured on them and they are whipped on the back with a spruce switch starting from the head. The Kart-priest waits for the animal to shake which is a sure sign that the victim's soul has been accepted by the gods. In the foothills of the mountain are three singled out trees, which represent the three main gods. Under the trees wicker tables are made which are covered with spruce branches. Bonfires are lit in appropriate places directly by these trees. At midday the remaining people arrive at the sacred place. Families and villagers come to pray in the foothills of the Holy Mountain. The day before they will have been to the sauna in order to come here in a pure, cleansed state. As they come from their homes, wax candles are lit and food is brought wrapped up in shawls. The stars had tried to purge the land of Mari of its pagan beliefs already on the advice and under the blessing of the Orthodox Church. When this was not successful the people were driven from the ancient Mari land and the border was moved so that the Holy Mountain was no longer part of Mari territory. When even this didn't work, they tried to destroy the mountain with explosives. Even today, one can see big boulders scattered at the foot of the mountain.

THE HOUSE OF CAIN, 78 min. 2000 GREECE

Written by Natasha Segou and Christos Karakepelis, Directed and produced by Christos Karakepelis, Photographed by Yannis Valeras, Sound by Thanos Mikroutsikos, Edited by Yorgos Triandafillou, Distributed by Greece Film Centre, 10 Panepistimiou Av, 106 71 Athens, Greece, Tel. +30 1 3617653, Fax +30 1 3614336, info@gfc.gr

Establishing murder as its main theme and seven ordinary people as the principal perpetrators of such an act, The House of Cain delves into images, recollections, nightmares, reality and the attempts made by these people to escape from this extreme situation in which they live. Six inmates, the chief warden and one ex-prisoner surround, each in his own special way, the irrevocable act, which embodies the absurd and shatters their individual existence. The detention center, the morgue, the museum of criminal exhibits, the courts of justice, the police headquarters, the derelict old prison, the cells of a newly built detention center, which have not been locked yet, and the streets of the city. All constitute the mournful route of the perpetrator, the mournful route of the main characters of this film, but also of the still unknown people, who may, at any given time, equally unexpectedly, find themselves in their shoes. the events, the intimate details are absent. The House of Cain is a journey in human decline and the guilt that each person experiences in the way and to the degree that he can. A silent lament, humble and awkward about a lost innocence and whether it can be regained is open to question. An exploration of man's limits but also of the boundaries of the documentary genre. The acrobatics of the characters and the acrobatics of style. The reality of the soul and the senses as the only film reality and record.

After his beloved grandfather had passed away, Canadian film maker Frank Cole decided to face death himself: all alone, he traveled straight across the Sahara desert, with a camel and a stock of food as his sole support. Via Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Chad, he hoped to reach the Red Sea a distance of more than 6000 kilometers. The infernal expedition took months and Cole often got lost, because time and again his map turned out to be wrong. Setbacks were numerous: water sources had disappeared, sandstorms rose, the camel passed out from exhaustion, brigands lay in wait and the Chad police suspected Cole of spying.

The documentary covers the 20-year history of the German avant-garde band "Einstuerzende Neubauten", probably one of the most important German bands next to "Can" and "Kraftwerk". The film contains film material from the very beginning of the band in the 80 ties, wall time Berlin with its punk movement, performances in the US and Japan as well as recent interviews with its members. Comments by their London eccentric label boss Stevo and Nick Cave, a close friend of the band, give a good picture of their role in the international music scene.

Imagine New York's art connoisseurs dressed for the gallery round on beautiful Sunday in May. Then imagine naked, pink human bodies coming out of a steaming sauna. Now cross-pollinate the connoisseurs with the sauna bathers and place this strange experiment in New York. This is the scene of Stefan Randström's documentary, where the Finnish architect and artist Pia Lindman gives the visitors of New York's Museum of Modern Art a bath in a real Finnish sauna. Sauna, nudity and Americans are the core of this wonderfully crazy documentary. Why is it so hard for Americans to show their naked body? How come Finns think it is so natural to be naked with total strangers in a sauna?

This story comes from the West Indies at the crossroads of several worlds, Hispanic, American, African, between Puerto Rico and New York. Our main guide is William Cepeda, one of the world's most powerful trombonists. First invited by Dizzy Gillespie to join the "United Nation Orchestra", he settled in New York, and now is creating his own musical flavor, a fusion of authentic traditional Puerto Rican music and the most " avant-garde" Jazz, highlighting the strong rhythm of the Bomba which originates from Africa. To follow his footsteps gives us an opportunity to delve deeply into Puerto Rican culture. We meet and enjoy characters, at the cross point of multiple identities, both in his hometown, Loiza, or on the streets of New York. Cepeda: " Bomba is like any music, you have to study it. But you also have to feel it in your body, you cannot only listen to it, you have to dance, to sing, to be able to understand what is happening". Back in New York, his challenge is to transmit the essential elements of his music to other musicians coming from different cultural backgrounds: our images portray this exiting exchange between different musicians (Donny, from California, and Martillo from Loiza) will have to find their own common language, in music.

Created amid untouched nature and the vicious civilization of metal are the very true icons of our time: large human heads with faces full of suffering, cramps, howls? Together with the sculptor we utter a warning howl, warring over the point civilization has reached and where it is heading.

Since the late sixties, Israel has been home to a community of Afro-American Israelites. These former Americans fled their native country, and more particularly the poor social conditions they grew up in. They believe they have the same ancestors as the Jews and they speak Hebrew. Their community is strictly religious and has a patriarchal social structure, in which men are allowed to marry several women. "Sister-Wife" tells the story of two women who are married to the same man. Zipora has been married to Hazriel for 21 years and they have nine children. Seemingly stoically, she accepts her husband's new marriage to the younger Er'ela. Polygamy is a spiritual truth, the priest says, but Zipora's mother has a different opinion: "If your father pulled that one on me, I would burn him and his new wife alive," we hear her say to her daughter over the phone.

ÕDE-NAINE, Hadar Kleinman ja Timna Goldstein

Iisraelis elavad peale juutide ka afro-ameeriklased ning neil on tavaks mitmenaisepidamine. Zipora on oma mehe Hazrieliga 21 aasta jooksul sünnitanud 9 last. Filmi tegemise ajal võtab Hazriel juurde noorema naise Er'ela.

A man built a Mausoleum for himself while he was still alive! Where? In the middle of an ancient orthodox cemetery. But something is wrong with the electric bulb in the big red five-pointed star on the top of the Mausoleum… Surrounded by symbols and idols, with his mind imprisoned by ideology, the hero is as alone as the last man on earth. Toasting "Long live ourselves and our Serbia!" while drinking out his plum brandy over the sea of tombstones, making a ridiculous mixture of nation and red ideology, he is but a small piece of the grotesque picture of this region's necrophile mind.

A coarse karst of Montenegro: far from civilization, a family means the village. "The Lord created human beings to grab from nature..." All they touch becomes fertile grafted wild plants bear fruit, honey flows down from primeval beehives… Transformation of harsh, dry, rocky soil into a fertile oasis is followed by family growth: one, two, three daughters. The third one is given the name STOPIT (Stanojka), believing this will cause the girl line to cease and make the fourth be a boy. But only the sons count as Montenegrin folk custom prescribes. The film is full of mythological and religious symbolism.

THE TAKH - BACK TO MONGOLIA, 68 min. 2001 THE NETHERLANDS (filmed in Mongolia, The Netherlands, Germany and Russia)

Written and directed by Micaela van Rijckevorsel, Photographed by Daniel Gallenkamp and Matthew Aeberhard, Sound by Charles Kersten, Edited by Erik Disselhoff, Produced and distributed by Visser & Van Rijckevorsel Filmprodukties, Hugo de Grootkade 13, 1052 LN, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Tel. +31 206 180467, Fax +31 206 852799, jvmic@euronet.nl

The film tells the story of the wild horse, which became known in the west in 1881 as the Przewalski's Horse. It was already long known in Mongolia as the Takh. At the end of the 1960's, the horse became extinct in the wild. Only a few species survived in captivity. With the help of the Russians and the Mongolians, a Dutch couple made a plan to attempt to reintroduce the Takh into the wild. The beautiful Nordic steppes of Mongolia were chosen as the appropriate area. After the revolution in Mongolia at the beginning of the 1990's, the Mongolians took more interest in their rich historical and cultural background. Here the horse plays an important role. The return of the Takh became a symbol of Mongolian cultural identity. The film explains the history of this ancient wild horse, how it lived in Mongolia and in its legends, how it became extinct in the wild and how the plans for reintroduction finally result in air transport of wild horses from Europe to Mongolia. In addition, the film shows the relationship and cooperation between different cultures and peoples who share a love for nature, history and culture.

The seven individuals in the film are widely different and unrelated people, as the opening statement of the film illustrates, just seven out of more than eleven million that live in Tokyo. Because of the familiarity of the subject matter, and the warmth with which the stories are told, the audience learns something new about Japan from the experience of meeting ordinary Japanese, and so to speak, looking them in the eye.

The film documents the last performance of the ritual for the fertility goddess Amb Kor in the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. The film is narrated by the headman "Ru" who speaks directly to us about his clan's recent problems, infant mortality, and decision to return to previously abandoned tribal territories. The arrival of the ancient female spirit Amb Kor comes to him in a dream and he is convinced that in order to regain their former strength and health the clan must perform this ritual for the Goddess. A tremendous organizational effort ensues and different styles of anthropological analysis, both Marxist and Capitalist, are brought to bear on the meaning and purpose of the cult activity. One clansman tells us that the Lutheran church condemns the cult ritual as the work of the devil but Catholic missionaries are more supportive. In the end, participation in the ritual by anyone who has been baptized in the Christian church is forbidden.

Filmis on jäädvustatud viimast rituaali viljakusejumalannale Amb Kor'ile Paapua Uus-Guineas. Keegi, kes on ristitud kristlikus kirikus, ei tohi sellest osa võtta.

This violence is invisible because it is confined to school and the home. It is difficult to find protection from such violence. Elf Disco presents the cases of Kätlin, Märt, Marek and Indrek. Each of them has in their own right lived through more than most children their age. Elf Disco is an expedition into a hidden and traumatic zone of society.
